Demons and Angels

In the movie Transiberian, one of the characters, when asked to quit smoking by her husband, smartly responds, "Kill off all my demons, and my angels might die too!".

This quote reflects the duality that exists amongst everything: right and wrong, black and white, war and peace - demons and angels. For duality to be preserved, whether in the material or in the paranormal state, both have to co-exist in harmony. As without one, the other serves no purpose or no desire to exist.

For me, this quote creates a profound clarity on the existence of opposites. Imagine this, there is someone in the world who lives the exact opposite to my life; my happiness is his/her sadness. Therefore, I'm in the belief that our existence is for the purpose of others to co-exist. It is the actions of this individual that makes my life exist in nature and vice-versa.

However, I'm equally saddened by learning of this. For my happiness, their sadness may be unbearable. As people gain wealth, there has to be others who get poorer. Similarly, for one's good health, there has to be others with poor health. So is it really our fault that world peace may never be attained, or is it the fact that nature's balance does not permit it?

On reflection, my character has caused imbalances to this delicate nature . In fact it has poked its ugly face as recent as early July. So moving forward, I'll contemplate every move and understand that it affects others. It will my goal to attain neutrality, or at least think of opposites.

We are truly the gate-keepers of our own destiny.
